Additional Sources for Financial Aid

Check the following web sites for additional financial aid information:

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the college level and are involved in building the movement for social and economic justice.

US citizenship is not a requirement but there is a strong preference for grantees who are building the progressive movement in the United States. Davis-Putter scholars are both graduate and undergraduate students and must be enrolled in an accredited school for the time period covered by their grant.

Early recipients fought for civil rights, against McCarthyism and to stop the war in Vietnam. More recently, grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international, anti-imperialist solidarity.

The maximum grant is $6,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the amount of funding available. All of the funds for scholarships come from the contributions of individual donors.

Completed applications and supporting documents -- including a personal statement, financial aid reports, letters of recommendation, transcripts and a photograph -- must be postmarked no later than May 1 and applicants will be notified of our decisions in July.

Consider applying for the following scholarships, if you meet eligibility requirements:
  • The Roothbert Fund, Inc. Scholarships: Fund's scholarships range between $500 and $2,000. Awardees commit to attending at least one weekend fellowship conference at Pendle Hill, a Quaker study center near Philadelphia. Fund was created to help those primarily motivated by spiritual values and who are in need of financial aid and satisfy "fairly high scholastic requirements." Scholarships are for undergraduate or graduate study. Preference given to those considering teaching as a vocation. Applicants must interview with Scholarships Committee - interviews are in March. Applications are available Dec. 1 and are due Feb. 1. For additional information, contact The Roothbert Fund, 475 Riverside Dr., Rm. 252, New York, NY, 212-870-3116.
  • The Leopold Schepp Foundation grants about 200 awards each year to full-time undergraduate and graduate students. The foundation also awards a small number of fellowships for independent study and research, usually post-doctoral. These fellowships are intended to "encourage research that will improve the general welfare of mankind. Because funds for such grants are limited, however, interested persons should inquire as to the availability of fellowships in their chosen field of study." Applicants must submit references, demonstrate scholastic ability, and show financial need. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet the following age limits: 30 years or less for undergraduates; 40 years or less for master's through doctorate; no age limit for post-doctoral research. Written requests for a formal application must be made in writing and should include responses to the following 9 points: 1) education to date; 2) year in college or university; 3) length of course of study; 4) vocational goal; 5) financial need; 6) age; 7) citizenship; 8) availability for interview in New York City; 9) print your name and address. Graduate students should include a resume as well. Lists close when a sufficient number of applications have been received for committee decisions. Awards are granted for one year only, though awardees may apply for renewal awards. Applicants are notified by mail of the committee's decisions by late April or early May. Send your request to: Leopold Schepp Foundation, 551 Fifth Ave., Suite 3000, New York, NY 10176-2597.
