Application Deadline: 18-Dec-09
Agency Information
Joint Council on International Children's Services (Joint Council) is a small nonprofit that advocates on behalf of children in need of safe, permanent, and loving homes. We are now accepting applications for up to six International Children’s Services Interns for spring 2010 (approximately 2-3 days/week, January through May).
Responsibilities and Skills
All interns work closely with various staff members. Depending on the final number of applicants, each intern may focus on one main project area to develop a deeper level of understanding and related skills.
POTENTIAL PROJECTS
Membership Drive:
Joint Council conducts an annual Membership Drive to recruit new members and encourage the renewal of existing members. Interns working on the Membership Drive interact closely with the Director of Programs and services:
- Review incoming applications
- Update and maintain information in the membership database (eTapestry)
- Update and maintain membership paper files
- Track results against membership goals and presenting regular updates
Fundraising and Viral Marketing:
As Joint Council expands its presence in the child welfare field, we look to increase our marketing presence—particularly in viral communities such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Interns focused on these initiatives would work directly with the Director of Programs & Services, as well as the President & CEO, to develop and implement related projects. Because this is a new area for Joint Council, this is a unique chance to develop related responsibilities that will remain in effect for future interns.
Annual Conference:
The Joint Council Medical Institute and Conference is held annually. Interns who focus on conference events will contribute to the planning of the 2010 conference, which will host more than 300 professionals in the child welfare community. The intern will work closely with the Joint Council Conference Committee, as well as the year-long Conference staff, to conduct the following tasks:
- Coordinate conference registration, including data input, maintenance and tracking
- Generate documentation and materials
- Correspond with agencies, medical doctors and other conference attendees
- Assist with public relations and outreach campaigns
- Respond to general conference inquiries
All applicants for the spring 2010 internship must indicate whether they would be able to travel to Baltimore, MD from March 17-20, 2009 to work onsite at the Conference. Joint Council will cover transportation, hotel, and meal expenses related to this travel.
Ad Hoc Projects:
All interns are a valuable part of Joint Council’s daily operations and may be designated to work on ad hoc projects. Potential projects include basic event planning, database development, website development/editing, and the drafting of communications, research, assisting with webinars, and assisting on advocacy projects.
General Administration:
- Assist with routine office duties such as answering phones, responding to email requests, formatting mail merges, handling UPS/FedEx pickups, and photocopying
Interns will receive the opportunity to learn about a variety of issues that impact child advocacy and international adoption, both in the United States and abroad.
The ideal applicant would have an interest in international child welfare issues and advocacy. He/she must be a self-starter with a Bachelor degree or working toward a Bachelor degree. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is a plus. Knowledge of website development/maintenance is a plus.
The internship consists of a minimum commitment of 10 hours a week. This is an unpaid position, but can meet credit criteria for undergraduate or graduate degree practicum with approval from respective college or university.
