NCSSS Faculty Make Presentations at National and International Meetings

 

During the past academic year faculty at the National School of Social Service made a number of presentations at national and international meetings of social work and allied fields. James Zabora, Dean and Ordinary Professor, presented a paper entitled “Evidence-Based Practice: What is Possible Now” at the Society for Social Work Leaders in Health Care in Philadelphia, PA. He also chaired a symposium on cancer and the family at the Society for Social Work and Research annual meeting in Washington, DC and presented the Opening Plenary Session: Leadership in Oncology Social Work at the annual meeting of the Association of Oncology Social Work in Louisville, KY.

 

Michael Sheridan, visiting scholar, presented a paper entitled “Integrating Contemplative Methods into Social Work Education” at the North America Conference on Spirituality and Social Work in Chicago, IL.  Lynn Mayer, assistant professor, presented a paper entitled “Supporting Transitions from Part C to B: What Can Early Head Start Do to Make a Difference?” at the Annual Birth to Three Institute meeting in Washington, DC. Michaela Farber, assistant professor, presented a paper entitled “Linking Children’s Emotional Competencies at 36 months to Pre-Kindergarten Outcomes” at the National Early Head Start Research Consortium in Silver Spring, MD. Sr. Ann Patrick Conrad, associate professor and Sr. Mary Vincentia Joseph, professor emerita, presented a workshop in Cincinnati, OH at the Annual Program Meeting of Catholic Charities USA on the revised CC-USA Code of Ethics. Christine Sabatino, associate professor, presented a paper entitled “Response to Intervention and School Social Work Services: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Consultation Models to Aid Struggling Students” at the Annual Program Meeting of the School Social Work Association of America in Denver, CO.

 

A number of faculty members presented at the Annual Program Meeting of the Council of Social Work Education which was held in San Francisco, CA. Susanne Bennett, assistant professor, presented findings from her on-going research entitled “Attachment-Informed Field Instructor Training: An Evidence-Based Model for Social Work Education. Christine Sabatino, associate professor, Michaela Farber, assistant professor, Barbara Soniat, associate professor and Linda Donaldson, assistant professor, presented “University-Community Agency Research Partnerships: Connecting the Ivory Tower With The People”. Joseph Shields, associate professor, presented a paper with Heather Larkin, PhD ’06 and Peter Delany, PhD ’93 entitled “Systems Integration in Substance Abuse Treatment Programs: Organization and Client Correlates.” Joseph Shields also conducted a workshop with Peter Delany entitled “Using NIAAA’s Clinician Guide: Helping Patients Who Drink Too Much”.

 

Joseph Shields and Peter Delany presented a workshop entitled “From Evidence to Practice: The NIAAA’s Clinician Guide for Helping People Who Drink Too Much” at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Social Work and Research” in Washington, DC. Laura Daughtery, assistant professor, and Linda Donaldson, assistant professor, conducted a workshop at the North American Association of Christian Social Workers Convention in Orlando, FL entitled “Asset-Based Community Development and Catholic Social Teaching as a Foundation Model and Philosophy for Generalist Community Practice in Social Work”. Wendy Blome, associate professor, presented a paper entitled “Case Management in Child Welfare: Working Hard or Hardly Working” at the Child Welfare League of America National Conference in Washington, DC.

 

Lynn Mayer, assistant professor, presented a paper with Dorlisa Minnick, current doctoral student, entitled “A qualitative Study of Successful University-Field Partnerships” and Joseph Shields and Peter Delany conducted a workshop entitled “Using the NIAAA Clinician’s Guide: Implications for Undergraduate Education in Social Work” at the Annual Meeting of Social Work Bachelor Program Directors in Destin, FL.

 

Barbara Early, associate professor, presented two papers at the Annual Conference of the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work in Salt Lake City, Utah. One was “Nurturing a Community of Scholars in our Doctoral Programs: Teaching Doctoral Students to Teach”. The other was “Comprehensive/Qualifying Examinations: What, When, Why?”

 

Karlynn Brintzenhofeszoc, associate professor, Margo Aron, MSW ‘89 and Christine Callahan, current doctoral student presented a paper entitled “Translation of the “Profile of Adaptation to Life-Medical Psychosocial Screening Instrument into Spanish” at the Annual Conference of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care in Montreal and at the Annual Conference of the Association of Oncology Social Work in Louisville, KY. Karlynn Brintzenhofeszoc also presented the keynote speech entitled “Why Should I Add Research to My Practice? I Already Have Too Much to Do!” at the National Oncology Nursing meeting in Bloemfontein, South Africa. At this same meeting she presented two other papers entitled “Example of a Research Project from Start to Finish” and “How to Evaluate your Practice, Patient by Patient.”
